About This Role:

Under general supervision, provides prototype fabrication, design support, testing, and data collection to support Research/Engineering. Will have excellent fabrication skills including CNC programming and operation. Relies on experience and judgment to acquire or produce components, execute a test regimen, and collect data. Efforts may be directed towards technology development, new product development, or sustaining projects.

Essential Job Functions/Tasks:

Produces molded and machined prototypes of new and existing products. Also produces components, small equipment, and fixtures.

Uses molds, machining, and fabricating processes, including programming CNC machines from solid model CAD files, to manufacturing prototypes, test units, and needed equipment.

Assists conducting scientific testing of prototypes and ensures the quality and accuracy of all test data.

Fabricates prototype and production injection molds and ensures mold operation.

Iteratively modifies prototype molds and mold inserts to meet engineering development needs.

Maintains thorough research notes and test data.

Participates in new and existing product design and development efforts to support technology development, new product development, and sustaining projects.

Able to work successfully in cross functional groups throughout the organization in support of Engineering and Manufacturing objectives.

Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Qualifications:

Education/Training Required and Preferred:

High school or equivalent education. Two years of trade school or equivalent work experience.


Experience Required and Preferred:

Minimum two years progressive experience as a tool room machinist.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s) Required and Preferred:

KSA #1: Applied knowledge of mechanics and hydraulics.

KSA #2: Ability to program CNC machines and use tool room equipment.

KSA #3: Knowledge of engineering and manufacturing processes and procedures used in injection molding plastic parts.

KSA #4: Strong team, communication, and interpersonal skills.

KSA #5: Strong analytical, and decision-making skills.

KSA #6: Strong computer skills in all Microsoft Office and CAD modeling software.

KSA #7: Must be able to work overtime when required.

KSA #8: Knowledge of injection molding process preferred.

KSA #9: Plastic part modeling and design skills preferred.

KSA #10: Ability to fabricate prototype and production quality injection molds preferred.

KSA #11: Knowledge of irrigation products preferred.


Physical Demands:

Ability to stand and walk, to visit work areas, and to use machines. Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods to program or enter data.

Ability to climb stairs to gain access to upper level of the facility. Ability to lift and carry molds and other items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work in a variety of positions (bending, kneeling, crouching, twisting) to gain visual access into molding machines.

Manual dexterity, hand strength and coordination sufficient to grasp and handle parts.

Finger dexterity sufficient to use precision measuring instruments, to handle small components and to operate a computer.

Visual acuity sufficient to read prints and drawings, to use and read precision measuring instruments, and operate a computer.

Hearing sufficient to communicate with individuals in person and by telephone.


Work Environment:

Works in the office and plant with temperature controls. Uses safety glasses and ear plugs for safety protection in designated areas.
