La fundición a la espuma perdida permite la producción de piezas complejas. El proceso produce piezas complejas y reduce el mecanizado del acabado de la pieza. Para realizar una fundición a la espuma perdida, se fabrica un modelo de espuma de la pieza acabada. El modelo se sumerge en una solución acuosa que contiene una sustancia refractaria en suspensión. El material refractario recubre el modelo de espuma, en el que deja una fina capa resistente al calor. Se vierte arena alrededor del modelo, que proporciona soporte mecánico a la fina capa refractaria. A continuación, se vierte el metal fundido en el molde, que funde y vaporiza la espuma. Cuando el metal se solidifica, se elimina la arena que lo cubre, por eso recibe el nombre de fundición a la espuma perdida. La fundición a la espuma perdida permite obtener cualquier tipo de forma o tamaño. Los materiales más utilizados en la fundición a la espuma perdida son las aleaciones de aluminio, hierro, acero y níquel.
