5 Axis Milling: Five axis (5-axis) milling refers to the machining of a part whereas the part geometry is typically complex and requires the machine tool to position and articulate the cutting tool along 5 axes of motion vs. the more common 3 axes (X, Y, Z) of motion. The CNC machine tools used in this process are called 5-axis machines or 5-axis machining centers. Five axis machining is most commonly used in the aerospace industry to machine airframe components that have draft surfaces, turbine engine components and impellers.
