Vapor deposition is frequently used in the manufacturing of semiconductor devices. Modern semiconductors require incredibly small physical features that may only be feasible to manufacture using advanced techniques. Vapor deposition is one such technique. Each layer of a semiconductor can be laid through vapor deposition. By using a different mask for each layer in the semiconductor, incredibly complex physical layouts can be realized. Designing Parts for Vapor Deposition
Vapor deposition systems are systems that are designed to apply a thin film of some material on a surface. The coating material is vaporized and stored in a vacuum chamber. This material can then be deposited on a surface using a variety of physical and chemical processes. For example, a vapor that is created through the physical application of heat can be deposited on a surface by applying cold to that surface. There are other methods of applying vapor to a surface, but these require a chemical reaction to take place. For example, a surface may be coated with a chemical that reacts to the vapor molecules, bonding the molecules to the surface.
When designing a part for vapor deposition, a person must become familiar with the different methods used to coat with a particular substance. For example, a circuit board is usually coated with copper traces to form links between various semiconductors. An engineer considering to lay down copper using vapor deposition must research the various techniques used to deposit copper, and what the tradeoffs are associated with each different technique. Once a technique has been decided on, the engineer can then research to see what must be done to prepare his prototype board for the manufacturing process. Vapor deposition companies will require that the prototype is submitted in accordance to their standards, which take into account the requirements of a given deposition technique. Once the part has been suitably designed, the vapor deposition services can be performed. The result will be a professionally laid out circuit board.
