Open Die Forging

What Type of Parts are Good Candidates for Open Die Forging?

Open die forging is a process use to help shape metal parts. Each product designed using open die forging requires different instruments. For example to make a ring you need ring roller to expand the interior of the metal while it is heated. The industry continues to grow as the need for these types of products are necessary. With hydraulic equipment this is that kept to the success. Many internal components of hydraulic systems use products made through the process of open die forging. This type of work is done by blue collar individuals and can pay a living salary to an individual. Some technical training is needed and knowledge of mathematics and an understanding of equipment as a priority.

Designing Parts for Open Die Forging

Most individuals believe open die forging is used only to shape simple products like rings, bars and spindles. Actually open die forging can be used to make custom mechanical products as well. Experts in the field can use this process to create parts for cars, motorcycles and planes. The process begins with a metal product between a top die and bottom die that a generally attached to a hammer or press. The metal is then heated to roughly 2000 degrees. At this point the metal is molded or shaped into products. Many different industries use this process includes the jewelers, mechanics and boat builders.
