What Types of Parts are Good Candidates for Blow Mold Making?

Blow mold making is a manufacturing process most often used to make plastic parts that have hollow portions.  It differs from injection mold making in that wall thickness is determined by the space between the core and the mold.  Blow mold making work varies the width by how far the material is stretched when blown.  The most critical component of blow mold making machines is the accumulators/heads that blow the material into the molds.  Their specifications will differ according to the product being made.  The material needs to flow at a constant rate without any residue accumulation in the sprayer.

There is increasing reliance on this type of process due to the high growth rates in various forms of containers.  Beverage bottles in particular have seen huge increases in numbers and are often are made by blow mold making.  Because of the high quantity demanded for this industry, machines involved in blow mold making must be designed and built with durability and uniformity in mind.  The trend in the industry has long been to increase the rate of output per machine so the operator can produce more without having to purchase additional machines.  Several machines can be linked together so that parts can easily move from one step in the process to the next.

Blow molding companies tend to specialize in this type of mold making because techniques and procedures are very different than injection molding.  Blow mold making is also more difficult to make, and requires more precise accuracy.  Still, the use of products made by this method has become so ubiquitous that blow mold making work is now done all over the world.  The real limitation in this process is that the product thickness cannot vary too quickly.  A component may thin and thicken gradually, but this process will not accommodate abrupt changes.
