Shell Mold Casting
Shell Mold Casting |
Shell Mold Casting Process OverviewWhat is Shell Mold Casting?Shell casting is the process by which sand is mixed with a plastic binder and put into a box. Sand is dropped onto a heated metal pattern to form the casting mold shell. The mold shell may be in two or more pieces depending on the complexity of the part. The various parts of the molding shell are then glued or clamped together, placed in a pouring jacket and stabilized by surrounding the shell-casting mold with shot or sand. Shell casting produces parts that have a good surface finish, with a tight tolerance. Additionally, the production rate for shell casting is higher than with conventional sand molding. Metals typically used in shell casting include cast iron and alloys of aluminum and copper. |
