Powder Coating Process OverviewWhat is Powder Coating?Powder coating is the process of applying a paint coating formulated as a powder to a part. Two common types of powder coating systems are electrostatic and fluid bed powder coating. The nature of these processes dictates that powder coating is used only on materials that are suitable for conductivity or can be subjected to high temperatures without changing their physical properties. Electrostatic powder coating utilizes a wand to impart an electrostatic charge to the powdered paint and direct it toward the part. Fluid bed powder coating utilizes a stream of air to suspend the powder coating while a heated part is passed through the suspended coating. Heat is the agent that attracts the powder to the part and begins the bonding process. |
