Surviving China's Rapidly Changing Sourcing Tides

A Special Event (Held On Friday, July 13, 2007)
Watch Now
To quote Bob Dylan, "The times they are a-changin". And when it comes to China, they're changing faster than ever before. For the remainder of 2007, manufacturers sourcing from China are going to see either an increase in China export tariffs or a drastically reduced rebate rate for Chinese manufacturers (or complete elimination of a rebate). For Western companies, this will bring price increases. These price increases could be small (2%) or rather substantial (more than 10%). This comes on top of rising commodity prices inside China, not to mention new concerns over the safety and quality of Chinese products.

In this webinar, we invited a roundtable of experts to offer practical advice, insight and debate on the future of China sourcing within manufacturing. The webinar features Mitch Free, CEO and founder of MFG.com, James Jin, General Manager of MFG.com's operations in China, and Lisa Reisman, a global sourcing expert and founder and US practice lead for Aptium Global. This panel of experts is moderated by spend management blogger Jason Busch, who authors the well known sourcing blog: www.spendmatters.com. Meet the speakers.

The Global Sourcing and Total Cost Whitepaper Series from Aptium Global
These whitepapers—intended especially for small and medium sized manufacturers—examine China sourcing, global sourcing and developing a total cost understanding of sourcing activities. Comments or questions about these whitepapers should be directed to Aptium Global, an MFG.com partner, by email or by phone 773-525-9750:
  • Lean Sourcing: Creating Sustainable Purchasing Savings
No one said understanding the total costs of a global sourcing decision are easy—especially when China is involved. After all, that's why even some of the largest manufacturers have moved spend offshore only to bring it back to local or near-shore suppliers. This whitepaper offers a basic introduction to the components that factor into building a total cost understanding of sourcing taking into account both lean and strategic sourcing principles. It is also a good place to get started in thinking about how to build a total cost model
  • Crawl, Walk and Run—The Move Offshore
The decision to source offshore should never be taken lightly. There are numerous risks, costs and other variables that all manufacturers need to consider. So how do manufacturers make the move offshore? Our research and experience suggest that for more complex goods, the most effective strategies often involve a phased approach over a longer time period, perhaps even years rather than moving all sourcing offshore in one step. How does this work in practice? This whitepaper outlines a "crawl, walk, run" strategy to help companies get the most from their global sourcing—and China sourcing—efforts.
  • Sourcing From China: Everybody's Doing it So Why Should We?
You only have to crack open the cover of any major business magazine to realize that global sourcing has become the current centerpiece of most cost reduction strategy discussions. But is it right for small to medium sized manufacturers? While global sourcing, from China or elsewhere, clearly presents opportunities for companies in the manufacturing sector, many of these opportunities also bring significant risks. This whitepaper describes the benefits and risks of global sourcing and provides key strategies for overcoming the risks.
